Al Shene Marine Holding

The corporate story of Al Shene Marine Holding runs from Beirut roots in 1954 through Aberdeen and North Sea cold-chain transformation to today’s Edinburgh—Beirut export axis. The chapters below cover the founder’s journey and two-generation leadership.

Born in Beirut in 1954, Sultan Rashid Abdullah Rashid Al Shene entered trade in the early 1970s at historic Beirut Port — one of the Eastern Mediterranean’s key trade and logistics hubs. Raised at the heart of the family business and traditional port culture, he learned Mediterranean seafood, direct relations with fishing cooperatives and the ability to judge product quality while still fresh. Observing United Fisheries Co. (UFICO) and regional distribution networks, he adopted honesty, the word as capital, and steadfast customer loyalty as family principles. Those first steps became the commercial foundation of the Middle East–Europe seafood export bridge and of Al Shene Marine Holding.

Aiming to scale Mediterranean commercial experience globally, Sultan Al Shene turned to Scotland’s Aberdeen and Peterhead harbour region — among the UK and Europe’s seafood capitals. For premium Scottish Atlantic salmon, langoustine, brown crab and fresh white fish from the North Sea, the critical issue was loss of freshness. He centred operations on -30°C / -45°C industrial blast-freezing aligned with Star Refrigeration principles and cold-storage standards such as D&G Nolan. Freezing cellular structure at first landing locked freshness against time and transformed a traditional trading structure into an industrial cold-chain logistics force between the United Kingdom and global markets.
